Skiing with Children – useful hints and tips

Skiing with Kids

Most children love the snow and everything that goes with it – sledging, hot chocolate trips, igloo or snowman building, snowball fights and of course the skiing itself. Despite this, many parents still find the prospect of organising a ski holiday with the children incredibly stressful. Even the keenest skiers often accept defeat when it comes to finding reliable, fun, safe and stimulating childcare in the French Alps – but contrary to popular belief skiing with the children is not only possible but can even be great fun provided that you consider a few simple things before you book.

What age to start

Children can begin skiing at 3 or 4 years old (but 2 is not unheard of!) At this age, children will only manage an hour or two each day though and it is more a question of taking them out for a slide around on the snow to give them a taste. Don’t try to ski too much with very little kids. Make sure you keep things fun, and make time for other activites (snowman building, sledging and drinking hot-chocolate) and lots of rest and relaxation too.

When to travel

Consider weeks other than New Year and February Half Term if possible. These weeks are the most popular with families but they are the most expensive and the busiest. There are at least three more weeks in the season that fall in school holidays (Christmas and Easter), which offer better prices and less crowded slopes.

Christmas in particular is a magical time to take children skiing. Morzine puts on all sorts of special events over the festive period, making for a wonderful atmosphere, and there are lots of extra surprises waiting for you at our chalets too.

If possible, make the most of your children’s flexibility before they get old enough to be constrained by term dates or by important exams – go skiing in the cheaper off peak weeks while they are young.

Another thing to note is that March and April are likely to be much warmer, this is important for younger children who won’t enjoy skiing if they are cold.

Why come to Morzine

Morzine and Avoriaz have both won awards for being family-friendly ski resorts. They offer easily-accessible nursery slopes, and numerous green and blue pistes for children to tackle as their skiing progresses. The villages both offer a multitude of activities to keep children busy and there are regular children’s events taking place throughout the season. Morzine is also very easily accessible from Geneva airport, with transfer times of just over an hour, so there is no need to worry about occupying the kids during a long and stressful journey.

If you are looking for childcare, we can organise qualified British nannies to look after the little ones either in-house, or at the excellent local creche. This will make your holiday! Help with getting children ready, taking them to ski school and even bed and bath time can give you time to relax and enjoy a proper holiday (being parents of young kids we know how much you need one!). There is also a great kids’ clubs in Morzine – giving children the opportunity to meet and play with other kids.

Why stay in a catered chalet?

Our catered chalets are ideal for families as they provide a home from home, give you and your children plenty of space to relax and play; and can cater for children’s specific dietary and other needs. You can enjoy both time with the children; and adult time away from the children; knowing that they are safe in the chalet environment.

Ski Lessons

Choosing the right ski school for your kids is essential. We can recommend some excellent local ski schools who are great with children and really get the balance between tuition and fun spot on!

Booking early is essential – all of the best providers get booked up early, particularly during school holidays. Do not expect to be able to book ski school your preferred ski school when you arrive.

What to bring

It is easy to exceed your baggage allowance when travelling with children. To help, we have a huge range of equipment for children at your disposal in all of our chalets – including toys, cots and bedding, car seats, high chairs, sledges, games consoles and plastic cutlery/plates/bowls/cups. Other essentials like buggies and baby monitors can be rented in resort (pre-booking is advised). We can even organise for bulky items like nappies to be purchased for you and delivered to your chalet.

Some tips

  • bring 2 pairs of ski gloves so that will have a spare dry pair for sledging in the evening if the first pair get soaked on the ski slopes
  • A portable media player is a great way of passing the time on the flight and airport transfer
  • Layering clothes is the best way to keep children warm in the snow. Don’t forget to pack vests, long sleeved t-shirts, light fleeces and leggings.
  • Snow boots or wellies with good grip are a must for playing in the snow.
  • Eye protection is just as essential on a ski holiday as it is on a summer holiday. There can be beautiful sunny days in the Alps and the light dancing off the snow can sometimes be dazzling. For young skiers, goggles are great as they are more comfortable than wearing sunglasses (especially under ski helmets) and smalls struggle to take them off, so they stay on!
  • Protecting young skin is also very important so be sure to pack a sun cream with a high UV.
