Whether this your first time, or you’re a seasoned pro on your 10th ski holiday, ski lessons will at some point become a necessity to move on to the next level and enjoy this sport even more. Whether you are putting on a snowboard for the first time; learning how to ski parallel; how to conquer a giant mogul field; or venturing into the off-piste terrain, lessons will always help you to improve at a faster pace.
So what lessons do you choose, and which ski school do you go for? We’ve summarised the types of lesson available, and what you should be looking for when choosing a ski school.
It’s vitally important that children get the right tuition on the slopes to help them build confidence, learn the correct techniques and most importantly to ensure they have great fun!
You can choose between group or private lessons for the kids. There are benefits to both, as well as drawbacks. Group lessons are cheaper, but you should choose a ski school which restricts group sizes to a maximum of 6 children of a very similar ability level. That way they will spend less time hanging around waiting for others and more time practicing their skills. If cost is less of a concern, private lessons are by far the best choice for quick and tailored learning. The instructors full attention will be devoted to your children, the lessons can be more easily tailored to concentrate on the things that they need to practice, and there will be very little time spent waiting and getting bored!
Nearly all ski and snowboarding schools offer group lessons for Adults. You tell the ski school your ability level (from ‘never been on the snow before’ through to ‘advanced’, ‘freestyle’ or “off-piste”) and they will place you in a group with people of a similar standard..
Group ski lessons are generally cheaper than hiring a private instructor but the exact price will depend on the school, the lesson location, the time of year and the experience level you require. You often pay a bit more for guaranteed small group sizes, English instructors, and a great reputation, but these things are well worth the small extra cost.
Group ski and snowboarding lessons can be a bit frustrating if you are not all the same ability and the group is larger than about 5 or 6 people so is worth searching for a ski school that guarantees that it’s group sizes will be 6 people or less.
You should also consider using an English instructor when possible (or an instructor who speaks English to a very high level). Skiing is a very technical sport and it is much easier to understand the explanations of techniques and tricks if you are speaking the same language.
Private ski / snowboarding lessons can really make a huge difference to your technique and confidence levels. Once you’ve had a private lesson it is highly likely you will recommend it to others and you will understand the benefits of having an instructor help you – and you alone! Many people never return to group ski lessons after trying a private instructor.
When looking for private lessons you need to think about your needs and what you want to achieve, then use that information when comparing your options. Many ski schools offer lessons on specific skills and techniques (eg. mogul skiing, off-piste skiing, confidence building on steep icy slopes) as well as more general lessons.
Private lessons are undeniably more expensive than group lessons, but it’s a question of value for money, rather than absolute cost. Also, if you can group together with a couple friends (of the same ability level) and share a private instructor you can get the best of both worlds: tailored, private tuition at a lower per person cost.
Lessons are always worth considering, regardless of your ability level. They can help you improve your understanding of the slopes, perfect your technique and body position and recognise the dangers of the mountain. This in turn will increase the enjoyment you get from a day on the snow. Lessons never need to be about standing in a long line, tediously repeating exercises and not really understanding what you’re supposed to be doing. They should always be rewarding, challenging, exciting, varied and above all fun!
